Abilene IPv6 Update Heather Boyles, heather@internet2.edu APAN IPv6 Task Force2006-July-18
Outline • Infrastructure Deployment Status • Policy (peering, transit) • Native Multicast
Internet2 network infrastructure • Abilene dual-stack IPv6 network continues to perform well • No performance difference between IPv4 and IPv6 • Changes: improving connectivity to others
Internet2 network infrastructure, cont’d • Regional/State networks • Provide access for many institutions to the backbone • Campus deployment • Many still not there • Still running “hands-on” IPv6 workshops for campus (and state/regional network) engineers
Policy: Interconnection with other networks • Peer with R&E networks same as v4 • Also peer with commercial v6 networks (don’t do this for v4) • Since last APAN meeting, also buying v6 transit from Global Crossing (via PAIX)
Policy: cross-Abilene transit • Like v4, provide transit between non-US R&E networks • Had been providing transit between v6 networks (including commercial) • Stopped providing transit to commercial v6 peers – not their usual policy
Native Multicast • Added native RP to Abilene about 9 months ago • Since last APAN meeting, added: • AARNET, DREN, GEANT as peers • Indiana Gigapop connector • Have held one IPv6 Multicast “Hands-On” workshop (Feb. 2006)
Pointers • IPv6 working grouphttp://ipv6.internet2.edu/ • Abilene NOC IPv6 Informationhttp://www.abilene.iu.edu/advanced.html • Presentation and Exercises from IPv6 Multicast Workshop http://multicast.internet2.edu/workshops/albuquerque-IPv6/
