6. Write It: Descriptive Paragraph • Please take out a sheet of lined paper • Brainstorm a list of 3-5 places you could write about (suggestions on the next slide) • Answer these questions: • What do you see? Hear? Feel? Smell? • Visualize the setting • Make a list of the details
6. Descriptive Paragraph Suggestions • If you are having difficulty, you could write about this: • A paragraph about what your neighborhood is like on a hot summer day • A humorous paragraph about the worst meal you have ever eaten • A paragraph about the atmosphere at a sporting event you attended

6. Directions for the Paragraph • Review your list of details and identify a main idea that unites all or most of them • Write a topic sentence that includes a main idea about the setting you imagined • Consult your list of details to include in their paragraphs • Write four to five additional sentences that support the main idea and give specific details about the setting • Carefully check your paragraph correct punctuation, spelling, and grammar • Save it!
6. Example: Out over the horizon dolphins were jumping out of the water with incredible speed. They were heading right for the sun as it arose over the sea. A few steps later in the soft, wet sand that was still cold from the night, I came across a small, half-eaten shark and a few washed up jellyfish. Some steps later, I could feel a slight breeze blowing and the dry sand beneath my feet. I could hear the waves from the ocean come ashore and birds squawking as they were looking for food. Where was I? Any guesses?
