  2. 4-H SET:Specialize. Exercise. Transform. • Beginner learn by simple observations and facts directly given to them • Intermediate “learn by doing” through hands on experiments • Advanced gain a full, working knowledge of a subject through higher level thinking

What is Science?... … the systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation. • Involves observing the natural world  which leads to questions • Try to answer questions through experimentation • The results are a systematic knowledge of a subject

  7. Science Activity:Cookie Key • Classification Activity: • Use the Cookie Key to determine what the different kinds of cookies are… • The same process can be applied to the Entomology and Forestry projects to identify insects and leaves

What is Engineering? …the art or science of making practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences, as physics or chemistry, as in the construction of engines, bridges, buildings, mines, ships, and chemical plants. • Learning what science tells you • Relate your “textbook knowledge” to practical use • Understand how these uses apply to you and everyone else around you

  11. Creative Thinking Activity: • How do you put a giraffe in the fridge? • Correct answer: Open the fridge, put the giraffe inside, close the fridge. • This question checks if you tend to make simple things complicated.

  12. Creative Thinking Activity: • How do you put an elephant in the fridge? • Wrong answer: Open the fridge, put the elephant inside, close the fridge. Correct answer: Open the fridge, remove the giraffe, put the elephant inside, close the fridge. This question checks your ability to consider implications from your previous actions.

  13. Creative Thinking Activity: • The Lion King organized a moot for the animals: all the animals are present but one. Which one? • Correct answer: The elephant. The elephant is in the fridge. This checks your memory. Even though you did not answer the first three questions correctly, you will answer the next one for sure.

  14. Creative Thinking Activity: • You have to cross a river, but it is populated by alligators. What are you going to do? • Correct answer: You swim across the river because all the alligators are attending the moot. • This question checks if you learn quickly from your mistakes.

  15. Application of Abstract Principles • EXERCISE what you know to make something useful! • Now that you have learned something, go use your knowledge!

What is Technology? …the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. • Understanding science and engineering • Using technology to make tasks simpler • Create new technologies to overcome complicated problems
