Characteristics • Eskimo Curlews are the smallest curlew in North America • It is 12-14 inches long, including its 2-2.5 inch bill, and has a 26-30 inch wingspread • Its common color is pale cinnamon-brown, darker on the back and lighter below. There is a very light stripe over the eye. The bill is black and legs are dark green.

  3. Location In Kansas • Allen County • Anderson County • Barber County • Barton County • Bourbon County • Atchison County

  4. Habitat • Breed in Northwest Canada on wetlands north of the tree line, in open tundra and on tidal marshes • During migration, populations move south and east to gather on the coasts of Labrador and Newfoundland • They have also traveled across Kansas in flocks during spring migration.

  5. Reasoning of endangerment • Predation • Disease • Excessive hunting on migration routes during the 1800s have effected the population of Eskimo Curlews • At the beginning of the 1900s they were placed into the endangered list

  6. Prey and Predators • Eskimo Curlews diet consists of snails, worms, and other invertebrates within sight • Eskimo Curlews are secondary consumers • Men are predators to Eskimo Curlews for their meat

  7. Biotic potential • Their population is estimated to be less than 50 individuals • Females hatch 4 eggs at a time • Eskimo Curlew have a life span of up to 60 years
