1. Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know about AISand More! Designed for Brentwood Secondary Content Area Teachers

2. What’s all the hype about AIS? • New York State mandates that Academic Intervention Services be provided to all students receiving a level 1 or 2 on a NYS Exam. • The monitoring of these students in the 4 major content areas is the responsibility of the CLASSROOM teacher, not the AIS teacher.

3. I used the “99” on the performance notices, now what? • NYS requires reporting to parents 4 times a year that AIS is being monitored. • Brentwood has chosen to do this at the 5-week notices, rather than report card time. • But we also need to show “evidence of progress over time.”

4. How do we do that? And who determined this? • With a TAN (Teacher Assessment Notebook)or TAF (Teacher Assessment Folder) • Middle school core subject teachers all have TANs, while the FC will begin with TAFs and ultimately use what Ross/Sond chooses, since we are the 1st year of HS. • This has been determined by the District AIS Committee.

5. What goes in the TAN/TAF? • Think KISWIP • Who are your AIS kids? • Why is the student identified? (from which State Assessment.) • What are his/her strengths/weaknesses? • What interventions are being used? • What progress has been made?

6. Okay, but what do I put in the folder? • A Skills Checklist specific to your subject area. • A copy of the NYS Assessment Parent Report with the student’s score, bar graphs of specific skill areas and total score indicating a level 1 or 2. • Assessments that show growth in the student’s areas of need.

7. How many assessments per quarter do I need for each student? • At least one assessment per identified skill is required. • Three skills identified, three assessments required. • Teacher made assessments must have a grade and teacher comments. A Scantron sheet is not acceptable.

8. Any suggestions for assessments? • YES! • Read 180 Reports • Quarterly exams • Completed practice State assessments with teacher comments • School Island (Castle Learning) Reports

9. Can you tell me more about the School Island reports? School Island (Castle Learning) allows you to view/print reports showing Castle Learning Online activities. The Assessment Report shows performance in: • Individual assignment • By student or • By class • All course assignment

10. What about my ELL students and special education students? If the student is in your content area class, then you are responsible for monitoring and reporting their AIS progress. The exception to this is the special education teachers who are not required to keep a TAN/TAF since they already have a system in place for monitoring their students. ELL teachers will monitor beginner and intermediate ELL students ONLY.

11. What do I need to do now? • Fill out a checklist heading for each of your AIS students. • Identify 2-3 skills that each student is deficient in and that you will be working on during 2nd marking period.

12. When do I need to address this AIS issue again? • The choice is yours! • Each time you have an assessment that addresses a skill you may make a copy of it and place it behind the student’s checklist. Or - Wait until the end of the marking period when you are doing grades to make sure copies of the needed assessments are with each student’s checklist in your period folders.
