  3. RHI - A Brief History In the beginning…it sounded so easy • We’ll create an innovative public/private partnership and improve Montana’s overall health In reality…we had a lot to learn • We started listening

  4. RHI - A Brief History 2008 Bozeman Conference • Engaging the front-lines • Getting the lay-of-the-land • Connecting needs with what we can do 2008 Summer road-shows • Identifying the opportunity • Sharing and validating ideas • Senator Baucus helped facilitate these conversations

  6. RHI: A Health and Wellness Community and Resource Network Goal • Facilitate sharing ideas and expertise • Link community-based health & wellness and prevention initiatives throughout Montana

RHI: A Health and Wellness Community and Resource Network RHI – making it happen • A highly interactive web-based community/ “social network”www.montanaruralhealthinitiative.org • Regular communications via a listserv and e-newsletter • Webinars and educational programs designed to improve the capacity of rural Montana health & wellness programs

  8. A Highly Interactive Web-Based Community • “Social media” content sharing approach • Users create profiles and upload/share information • Searchable central repository of information, experts and events • Quickly takes a user from a question to an answer

  10. II. Listserv and e-newsletter Progress to date: • First quarterly newsletter • Highlighting programs and upcoming events • Increasing communication for over 550 individuals

  11. III. RHI Webinars Progress to date: • Six different programs have shared their expertise • Over 180 individuals viewed live • Recorded and posted online • Ongoing monthly webinars

  15. What is Shape Up Montana? Three-month team wellness program (February–May) engaging Montanans in a sustainable physical activity and healthy eating routine. Survey Results 66.4% Exercised More54.2% Ate More Fruits/Veggies 53.6%Cut Down on Fast Foods47.9%Cooked Healthier At Home 60.4% Felt Healthier at Conclusion of SUM53.1% Felt Better About Themselves at conclusion91.1% Said the program helped lead Healthier Lifestyle98.1% Said they would recommend SUM to a friend 2009 Shape Up Stats 963 Teams 7,430 Participants 140 Communities Total Miles: 1,905,534 (76.5 Times around the world) Total Weight Loss: 5,251 (5.4 Pounds lost per member) 2009 Completion Rate for Activity Teams: 87% 2009 Completion Rate for all Divisions: 83%

Chippewa Cree Wellness Center Goal: Coordinate and create more prevention and health related activities for the entire community • Opened February • 2006 in conjunction • with the Rocky Boy • Clinic • Collaborative effort • between the clinic • and wellness center • to address diabetes • in their community
