  2. Cardiovascular training – such as running, biking, stairclimbing, or swimming – is regarded by many people as being a hellish experience tantamount to Sisyphus’ punishment of rolling a boulder uphill. The unfortunate thing for those people is that cardio is a great way to lose weight because it burns the most calories per workout – essentially, you get the most bang for your buck by running. However, that doesn’t mean that cardio is the only way to lose weight. Weightlifting can also help you lose weight by increasing the amount of muscle tissue in your body. Because muscle tissue burns more calories than other types of tissues, the additional muscle put on by weight training can help you lose weight in the long run.

  3. However, it is not a suitable replacement for cardiovascular training if weight loss is your primary goal. Yes, weightlifting will increase your resting metabolic rate, but it will do so slowly, and you will see a decrease in fat loss equally slowly. Cardiovascular training, on the other hand, can burn a lot of calories in a very short amount of time, and you will see more immediate benefits from running or biking than you will from weightlifting. If we take running as an example, an hour run at five miles per hour will burn five hundred calories. That gives you a big caloric deficit that can help you lose weight. If, on the other hand, you spend that hour doing bench press, squats, and military press, you will burn significantly fewer calories and will not be in as big a calorie deficit.
