What is type 1 diabetes • Born with it. Usually diagnosed when young • 5% of all diabetes • Body isn’t producing insulin/enough insulin • Insulin is a hormone that converts sugar and starches into energy.
What is type 2 diabetes • Pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin • The insulin doesn’t work as well as it should • Liver produces too much sugar.
What causes diabetes? Type 1 vs type 2 • Born with - genetics • Types 2 is genetics and behavioral. • Overweight • High sugar and starch diet • Processed foods
What are the symptoms – high blood sugar • Lack of insulin • Feel weak and tired • Blurry vision • Dry skin • Thirsty • Need to pee a lot
What are the symptoms – low blood sugar • Extreme hunger • Cold clammy skin • Trembling • Mood swings • Confusion • Poor coordination • Seizures • Loss of consciousness • Low body temperature
How is your food intake related to diabetes • Body can’t regulate glucose in the blood • Low blood sugar needs sugar in diet • High blood sugar needs foods without sugars in them.
How is type 1 diabetes managed/treated? • Monitor blood glucose levels • Doses of insulin on a strict schedule • Proper amounts of carbohydrates on a regular schedule
How is type 2 diabetes managed/treated? • Insulin injections • Can be “cured” through diet and exercise • Lose Weight • Low sugar/starch diet • Exercise
