A disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin • Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life.
The causes of Diabetes • A mystery • Both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play a role
Genetics of Diabetes • Inheritance • Environment
Type 1 Diabetes • Called the juvenile diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes • Results from the body’s failure to produce insulin, the hormone that “unlocks” the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter
Type 2 Diabetes • Results from insulin resistance combined with relative insulin deficiency • Dailey insulin is not required, but moderate changes in exercise and diet are required
Symptoms • Blindness • Heart diseases and strokes • Kidney diseases • Amputations • Nerve disease • Excessive thirst and Urination • Blurred vision
Increased fatigue • Extreme hunger • Unusual weight loss • Irritability
