When was the law made? • The Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 and signed by John F. Kennedy.
What was its purpose? • The purpose of the law was amide at abolishing wage differences based on Gender.
How does it protect the employee • It protects the employee by giving him or her the chance to earn the same amount of salary as long as the have the same skills, show the same effort and responsibility.
How does it protect the employer • It help employer to keep a moral business. And not have fighting over pay discrimination.
Are there any court cases that involve this law • Until the 1960’s jobs were listed either for men or women. • Schultz v. Wheaton Glass Co stated that one cannot change the job title of women workers in order to pay them less than men. • Corning Glass Works v. Brennan (1974) stated employers could not justify paying women lower wages because that is what they traditionally received.
Why is this law controversial • It causes a lot of debate, because how do you measure ones rate of work, or actual ability to work. Which is used a lot to discredit women into earing lower wages.
