Narrative Forms. Fable. A story that teaches a lesson often using animal characters that behave like people. Example) The Tortoise and the Hare. Fantasy. A story about characters that may not be realistic and about events that could not really happen.

  2. Fable • A story that teaches a lesson often using animal characters that behave like people. • Example) The Tortoise and the Hare

  3. Fantasy • A story about characters that may not be realistic and about events that could not really happen. • Example) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

  4. Folktale • An old story that reveals the beliefs and customs of a culture. • Example) Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears

  5. Historical Fiction • Stories about characters who might have lived in the past and about events that might have really happened in history with some made up details and events. • Example) Number the Stars

  6. Legend • A story that is based on fact but often includes exaggerations about the hero. • Example) The Legend of Johnny Appleseed

  7. Myth • An ancient story often meant to explain the mysteries of life or nature. • Example) The Treasury of Greek Mythology

  8. Play • A story that is told mostly through dialogue and is meant to be performed on stage. • Example) Romeo and Juliet

  9. Realistic Fiction • Stories that portray characters and settings that could exist in real life as well as events that could happen in real life. • Example) Lunch Money

  10. Short Story • A brief story that usually focuses on one character and one event. • Example) A Bad Case of the Stripes

  11. Tall Tale • A humorous story that tells about impossible happenings exaggerating the accomplishments of the hero. • Example) Paul Bunyan

  12. Directions: • Each slide will have a description of a narrative form of writing like the ones we just discussed. • Using your handout, show the number of the narrative form you think is being described.

  13. Description: A story about two friends told mostly through dialogue. Answer: #7 - Play

  14. Description: Story about a girl who learns to swim. Answer: #8 – Realistic Fiction

  15. Description: Story about a boy and a girl who helped American soldiers during the Revolutionary War. Answer: #4 – Historical Fiction

  16. Description: A story about a coyote that played tricks on other animals and is punished for it. Answer: #1 – Fable OR #3 - Folktale

  17. Description: A story about how mountains came to be. Answer: #6 - Myth
