Photosynthesis Chapter 13 Ms. Veale 14/03/2013
In todays class, we will • Describe, using a word equation how plants make their own food through photosynthesis
Why do you think that one of these plants is dying and one is healthy? • What do we think plants need to photosynthesize? • Photosynthesis song
The leaf • Photosynthesis is how green plants make their own food. It occurs in the leaf. • Chlorophyll is a green chemical in leaves which gives the plant its green colour. • Chlorophyll is found in tiny structures called chloroplasts. • Leaves are thin and flat so that more sunlight can be absorbed. • Leaves have tiny pores called stomata on their under surface. These allow carbon dioxide in, and water vapour and oxygen out.
How photosynthesis works • Chlorophyll (in the chloroplast) traps the sun lights energy • This energy helps to combine carbon dioxide gas and water vapour which form glucose and oxygen gas. • (Where does the carbon dioxide come from? Where does the water vapour come from?) • The glucose is then carried around the rest of the plant in special cells called phloem cells. • Why do plants need the glucose?
The equation for photosynthesis. • Very important!!! • (To help you remember it, think of baking a cake – Carbon dioxide and water are the ingredients, Chlorophyll is the oven which the light energy is the heat in the oven. Glucose is the cake while oxygen is the smell of the cake)
Glucose • All of the cells in a plant need glucose as a form of energy. • Plants go through a process called respiration which converts the glucose in to energy. • Photosynthesis occurs only during the day (because there is no sun during the night) but respiration occurs day and night. • Some glucose gets stored as starch in the plant. • Some glucose is converted in to protein by mixing with the minerals in the soil. • This protein can be used for repair damaged calls and for growth of new cells.
