Example 1 Possibilitiesfor DUS-examination in seaweed • Aim: development of methodfor DUS-examination in someseaweed species. • Conclusion: a protocol for DUS-examination andvarietydescription of seaweed has been developed. • Fine-tuning of characteristicsneeded. • Notyetclearifvarieties are availablewhichfullyfulfill UPOV-criterafordistinctness, uniformityandstabilityin Europe.
Example 2 Harmonization of disease tests in DUS (co-financedby CPVO) • Aim: European harmonization of resistance tests forsevenvegetablediseases. • Lettuce:Bremialactucae • Pea: Fusarium oxysporumf. sp. pisirace 1 andAscochytapisirace C • Pepper: TMV:0, PMMoV:1.2, PMMoV:1.2.3 and PVY:0 • Conclusion: test protocols are harmonizedbetweenthe European Examination Offices, exceptforFusarium in pea.Isolatesare defined. • Naktuinbouw has updatedthePlantumisolatecollectionaccordingly.
Example 3 Chimera as lack of Uniformity in DUS • Chimera: are theycausedbygenetics or byenvironmental factors? • Conclusion: they have a genetic background. • Theycannotbeignored in DUS-examination. • Differs per crop type. Crop-by-crop approach needed.
