  1. Chapter 10Graphing in the Coordinate Plane

  2. Chapter 10 Section 10-1 • Objective: At the end of the lesson, students will be able to • Locate a point on the coordinate plane • Graph points on the coordinate plane • Graph vertical and horizontal lines on the coordinate plane

  3. Chapter 10 Section 10-1 • Agenda • Anticipation Guide-Before column • Vocabulary • Examples • Practice • Classwork/Homework • Anticipation Guide-After column

  4. Vocabulary • Coordinate Plane – a grid formed by a horizontal number line called the x-axis intersecting with a vertical number line called the y-axis • The lines are perpendicular to each other

  5. Vocabulary • x-axis – horizontal number line • y-axis - vertical number line

  6. Vocabulary • Origin – O indicates the origin, where the axes intersect

  7. Vocabulary • Ordered Pair (x,y) – gives the coordinates of the location of a point • The ordered pair (0,0) indicates the origin O • Ordered pairs look like: (2,3) • The first component is the x value and the second component is the y value • They are always separated by a comma and enclosed within parentheses

  8. Writing Coordinates Example Locatethe coordinates of points A and B A(-2, 2) B(-3, -2)

  9. Vocabulary • x-coordinate – the first number in an ordered pair • It tells the number of horizontal units a point in from O • y-coordinate – the second number in an ordered pair • It tells the number of vertical units a point in from O

  10. Vocabulary • Quadrants – the x- and y- axes divide the coordinate plane into four quadrants 2 1 3 4

  11. Graphing a Point Example • Graph point A(3, -4) • Graph point B(3, 4) • Graph point C(-3, -4) • Graph point D(-3, 4) • What quadrant is each point located?

  12. Graphing a Point – More Examples • Graph point w(0, 0) • Graph point x(0, -2) • Graph point y(3, 0) • Graph point z(-1, 4)

  13. Vocabulary • Horizontal – lines that are parallel to the x-axis • Vertical – lines that are parallel to the y-axis

  14. Indentifying Horizontal and Vertical Lines • Graph the line containing points (-3,3) and (-3, 2) • Graph the line containing points (3, 2) and (-1, 2) • Which line is horizontal? • Which line is vertical?

  15. Indentifying Horizontal and Vertical Lines • Graph the line containing points (-4,3) and (-4, -2) • Graph the line containing points (3, 1) and (-1, 1)

  16. You Do • In your textbook • Page 524 numbers 1-12, 13-24 even, 26, & 28 • Anticipation Guide – After Column

  17. Conclusion • We learned how to • Locate a point on the coordinate plane • Graph points on the coordinate plane • Graph vertical and horizontal lines on the coordinate plane • Tomorrow we will begin to use plotting points and lines to begin a project
