TREKKING - GHANDRUK - GHOREPANI POON HILL TREK 8 days, 7 nights Detailed Itinerary The journey to Dhampus village, considered to be one of the paradises of Nepal, begins from Phedi village, which is nearly a 45 minute drive from the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara. From here, we will trek alongside beautiful views of golden rice terraces that span the vast expanse of the Annapurna Mountain range. This 2 hour climb to Dhampus continues through a magnificent rhododendron forest, which nests various species of birds, all the way to the village of Chandrakot, which is inhabited by the warm-hearted and hospitable Gurung people. In terms of climbing technicalities, it is an easy mountain to ascend. The overwhelming altitude differences between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges make Dhampus peak an ideal vantage spot to observe the mountains, especially with Tukuche Peak (6,920 m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) spectacularly close to you. When you emerge from the forest and reach Dhampus, you will be able to marvel at exceptional views of the massive Mt. Machhapuchhre, which is popularly known as Fishtail Mountain (6,900 m) because its peak resembles the shape of a fish's tail. From Dhampus, one can also grab the exceptional view of Pokhara, as the scenery gets even better as the sun goes down. The small village comprises of the enormous beauty of mountains, the friendly Gurung People, a small lake from where one can see the reflection of Fishtail, temples, flowers, mustard fields, birds, and much more. DAY 1 Today, we will follow a ridge to Deurali while descending through forest again for some time until we reach the small villages of Tolka and Bheri Kharka. The trail then continues descending through scattered forests and villages to reach Landruk. Landruk is on the trekking route to the Annapurna Base Camp and has fabulous views of the mountains, which is one of the highlights on the route. Landruk is famous for its honey hunting festival, where intrepid harvesters climb bamboo ladders and dangle from ropes to gather honeycombs from sheer cliff faces. DAY 2 Proceeding from Landruk, the trail makes a steep descent through terraced fields to Modi River. After crossing the river on a suspension bridge, the trail will climb all the way to Ghandruk. Situated at 1,970 metres, Ghandruk, the second largest Gurung village is one of the most beautiful villages in Nepal. Ghandruk is a wonderfully confusing cluster of closely spaced, slate-roofed houses nestled between terraced fields of wheat and barley. We finally arrive at Ghandruk for lunch, after which we tour the village and visit a local Gurung museum. DAY 3 It's a gentle climb through the woods until you cross a small river, after which the path climbs steeply for 45 minutes until we reach Bhaisi Kharka, where there are tea houses. After this, it is an easy 1 hour walk to Tadapani. The trail leads through a thick rhododendron forest to reach Tadapani, which is in another forest clearing. It stands on the ridge so you can experience good views on a clear day. We will have lunch and stay at Panorama Point, which is one of the highest teahouses in Nepal. In the afternoon, the group will go for a nature walk until 5pm.There is a small path that goes into the forest towards Annapurna South. If you are quiet, you may be lucky enough to spot the common langur, lots of exotic birds, and deer. TREKKING - GHANDRUK - GHOREPANI POON HILL TREK 8 days, 7 nights Detailed Itinerary Watching the sunrise from Tadapani is highly recommended. The walk from Tadapani to Ghorepani is approximately 7 hours, including lunch at Deorali (3,150 m).The trail starts with a descent for some time before a steep 20 minute climb to a small teahouse in the clearing. From here, the trail undulates until you reach Banthanti (2,520 m). Banthanti is a good place to take a tea break, because from here it will be a steep 1 ½ or 2 hour walk to Deorali. At Deorali, the trail ascends gently through the forest for 20 minutes until you see the Dhaulagiri range and Nilgiri Himal. It's one of the best walks on this trip because on a clear day, the views from the ridge are simply stunning. The path finally descends to Ghorepani, and you begin to see the charming blue-roofed houses. Should we get to Ghorepani in time, we will all go for a walk up Poon Hill to see the sunset if the weather conditions are clear. We will be spending the night at the Hilltop Hotel. DAY 5 We will first enjoy an hour long early morning walk from Ghorepani to Poon Hill for the sunrise over the Himalayas. We recommend that guest should take warm jackets, gloves, hats and a torch, especially in the autumn season. The best sky colours are visible before the sunrise, so it's better to get to the top 20-30 minutes before the sunrise. The sunrise is absolutely spectacular on a clear day. You will be able to see the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Ranges, and many more beautiful mountainscapes. After this, we will come back down to Ghorepani for breakfast and to pack up. Once we start our trek, it is downhill all the way through the woods to Ulleri via Nangethanti and Banthanti. We will stop for lunch at Nangethanthi or Ulleri, depending on what time we left from Ghorepani. After lunch, we will begin a very steep descent of approximately 3600 steps to Tikhedhunga. DAY 6 It's an easy walk while we follow the river to Birethanthi, where we can stop for tea and then cross the river, after which it is 30 minutes to Nayapul where we finish the trek. Since we will be walking along the Burundi River, there is a very good chance of seeing lots of aquatic birds, including 3 species of the Kingfisher, the Wagtail, Forktail, Thrush, Brown Dipper, and the Chat. From here, we continue to follow the Modi River towards Nayapul, where we meet our vehicle for the hour and a half drive along the banks of Phewa Tal Lake to get to Pokhara. Pokhara is Nepal's second largest town and is said to be more relaxed than Kathmandu. Its beautiful lakeside setting, which falls beneath the imposing shadow of the stunning Annapurna Range, makes it the perfect ending for our trek, with only the foothills separating the town from the high mountain landscapes of the snow-capped Annapurna. Books to Read Annapurna by Maurice Herzog - Considered to be one of the greatest mountain adventure stories of all time, Maurice Herzog tells his tale about being one of the first people to summit the Himalayan peak of Annapurna back in 1950, when no mountain that tall had ever been climbed. Herzog bravely guides a group of French climbers back when no maps existed for their unplanned route. Follow them on this historical journey, which is a summit paved with many adversities and multiple near-death situations. Beyond the Mountain by Elizabeth Arthur - This book follows the story of Artemis, who goes on an excursion in the Annapurna valley with her brother, Orion, and her husband, Nicholas. While this very much a story about the woman's most important climb in her life, this is also a story about the woman's experience climbing with two of the most important men in her life. As the story goes along, Artemis reflects on past experiences which shed light on her complicated relationship with both men. Typical Day on the Trip Each morning after packing our bags and having a good breakfast, we set off on the day's walk. After walking for 3-4 hours we stop for lunch at around midday. The afternoon's walk is generally shorter and we usually arrive at our destination in time for afternoon tea. On some days we will arrive at our destination by lunchtime and the entire afternoon will be free. After dinner, the evening will often be spent playing cards and reliving the day's adventures, before heading off to bed for a well-earned sleep.
