Deterring Criminal Activity • What can you do to deter criminal activity • Monitor your property throughout shift • Do not count money in front of costumers • Maintain low funds inside register • If you have a bulletproof enclosure, they may attempt to bring you out by saying: • Bathroom’s overflowing • You’re out of coffee • Can you help me find an item If you are alone at night, do not exit the enclosure to help costumers, until you have additional personnel

Deterring Criminal Activity • Do not allow individuals to loiter around your business • Greet all costumers as they enter your store • Learn how to use all security equipment at your business: Cameras, Panic Button, Automatic Door Lock • Close and all sensitive areas: • Register door/glass • Utility closets • Storage room

Be Observant • Let customers know you see them • Greet them as they enter the store • Ask if they need assistance finding an item Questions to ask yourself…. • Are they looking for merchandise or looking at you? • Have they visited the store several times on this date? • Have they been loitering in the parking lot? • Are they dressed appropriately? Ex. Wearing long jacket during summer • Do they park away from all the other customers? • Are they behaving abnormally? CONTACT POLICE DEPARTMENT IF YOU SUSPECT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

Reacting to Incident • If you find yourself in the middle of a robbery • Keep Calm-Most robbers want money and do not wish to harm anyone • Cooperate- DO NOT fight back, argue, or try to reason with the criminal. Give them what they ask for and LET THEM LEAVE. • No Surprises- Let them know of other employees or customers in the store • Take Mental Notes: • Clothing • Sex • Race • Scars/Tattoos • Accent • Items they touch • Description of weapon • Vehicle

Recovering from Incident • What to do afterwards • Contact Police Immediately • Tell them you need the Police immediately because you were “Just Robbed” • Give them suspect description, what they stole, what weapon was used, and direction of travel • Stay off the phone afterwards because they may call you back for additional information

  7. Recovering from Incident Cont. • Lock Door • Ask witnesses to stay on scene to provide statements to Police • Do not let others in who can contaminate the crime scene • Do not touch anything the robber may have touched • Provide Aid • Attend to any injured customers or employees

  8. Recovering from Incident Cont. • Document • Complete Suspect ID Form • Do not discuss incident with other witnesses to avoid sharing of wrong information • Make Police Report • Notify ARA Chief Security Consultant 678-577-3617

  9. Responding to Burglary • If Alarm company contacts you in the middle of night and notifies you of a burglary alarm • Contact Police Department in the jurisdiction where the business is located and advise them of the burglary alarm and that you are responding to the scene • Do not enter the parking lot of your business without the Police present LET POLICE CLEAR THE PROPERTY FIRST

Responding to Burglary Cont. • Keep in Mind… Is someone calling you out in the middle of night so they can rob you? • Notify someone if you contacted after hours and let them know you are responding to the store • Call the Police Department back and let them know when you are about 5 minutes away from arriving at the scene • DO NOT ENTER PROPERTY UNTIL POLICE IS PRESENT
