agenda • Details about PBL • Try It! • What will it look like in your room? • Explore the website! • Wrap-up/Share • Evaluation
Who? • Ben BacheThe PBL Project, manager2435 E. North St., #245Greenville, SC 29615-1442(864) 877-5123www.pblproject.com • All teachers/subjects
What? • Project Based Learning—given a current event/topic, students solve a problem based on that event/topic. • http://www.pblproject.com/ • What is provided: • Teacher Instructions • Classroom Discussion sheet • "Stimulus Items" (videos, articles, etc.) • note-taking sheets • grading rubric
try it! • We have copies and iPads ready for you all to work in groups and complete one of the weekly warm ups together. • We also have copies for you to take back to your classes and try on your own.
When? • We do not complete one each week, we normally read the topics when we receive the email from Mr. Bache and then decide if we are going to complete the topic provided. • We use this on our flex day in the lab. I normally skip lab that day since my students have met their minutes for the week on Compass and FastMath. • What do you think? When could you see yourself using this in your classroom?
Where? • We begin the topics in the classroom (math, science, social studies) • We allow our students to choose their groups or assign the groups. • If you need to use the lab, each student could pull up the website and complete most of the activities individually. • Does anyone else have any ideas?
Why? • These exercises are used to promote "Common Core Thinking," and will pay off when students are asked to complete performance tasks during the CC assessment. • The children love working on these problems. They do not realize they are preparing for a test. • The learning is done in a “new” way. Watching videos, taking notes, reviewing an article, etc.
how? • The how is where your expertise comes in to play. • We choose to cut something out and let our children use iPads in groups. • We require each child to participate. I occasionally let children work alone if they do not want to work in groups. The child working alone uses the desktop computer instead of an iPad.
