TOPICS TO BE COVERED DEFINATION OF MECHATRONICS BASIC ELEMENTS OF MECHATRONICS OVERVIEW OF MECHATRONICS DESIGN PROCESS REAL TIME MECHATRONICS SYSTEM ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES APPLICATIONS INTRODUCTION TO CNC FUNCTIONAL BLOCK DIAGRAM OF CNC FMS CIM ROBOTICS AVCS PLC
MECHATRONICS Mechatronics is an inter disciplinary technical branch, built upon the basis of classical mechanical, electrical, electronics engineering & computer science engineering.
APPLICATIONS OF MECHATRONICS • CNC machine • FMS • CIM • AVCS • ROBOTICS • Air traffic control • Automatic machine • Automatic camera
BASIC ELEMENTS OF MECHATRONICS • The basic elements of mechatronics are divided into following: • Electrochemical • Electrical/Electronics • Control interface/computing hardware • Information system
OVERVIEW OF MECHATRONICS DESIGN PROCESS MODELLING & STIMALATION, PROTOTYPING & DEPLOYMENT
Mechatronics design consists of three phases as given below: 1) Modelling and Simulation • Recognition of need • conceptual engineering design • mathematical modeling • sensors and actuators • Development of detailed models 2) Prototyping 3) Deployment
INTRODUCTION TO REAL TIME MECHATRONICS SYSTEM Definition:- It is the system which has to respond to externally generated input signal within a finite & specified time. There are two types of real time systems: • Hard real time system- Missile launching system • Soft real time system- CD player
FEATURES OF REAL TIME MECHATRONICS • Reliability • Fast response • High degree of schedulability • Stability under overload • More flexibility • Size is less • High accuracy • Easy to operate • Less power consumption
ADVANTAGES OF MECHATRONICS SYSTEM • Enhancement of traditional system • To increase accuracy • It is less expensive • It increases the rate of production • It is more safer than traditional system • More flexible • Require less operaters
DISADVANTAGES OF MECHATRONICS SYSTEM • System design is complex • Highly skilled persons are required • Knowledge of more than one trade required • Replacement is difficult • Repair & maintenance is complex • More noisy
COMPUTER NUMERICAL CONTROL(CNC) • It is the system in which stored program is used to perform all the basic numerical control functions in accordance with control program stored in read-write memory of the computer.
TYPES OF CNC MACHINES • Lathe & turning • EDM machine • Grinding machine • Cutting machine • Fabrication machine • Welding machine • Co-ordinate measuring machines
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF CNC SYSTEM ADVANTAGES: • Elimination of operator errors • Lower labor cost • Increased accuracy • Flexibility in changes of component design • Longer tool life • Less scrap DISADVANTAGES: • Require more skilled person • Not suitable for long run applications • Maintenance cost is high • Require air conditioners
APPLICATIONS OF CNC • Used in metal cutting such as milling, drilling, boring, turning, grinding & sawing. • Welding • Press working machine tool • Laser beam process • Cloth cutting • Wire wrap machine
FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM (FMS) A FMS is a production system which is capable of producing a variety of products or parts using an automated set of numerically controlled machine tools and material handling systems with virtually no time lost for change over from one product to the next.
TYPES OF FMS Types on the basis of no. of machines: • Single machine cell • Flexible manufacturing cell • Flexible manufacturing system Types on level of flexibility: • Dedicated FMS • Random order FMS
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF FMS ADVANTAGES: • Improve efficiency • Improve product quality • Produce more product in less time • Used to reduce setup & queue times • Utilizes human workers better DISADVANTAGES: • Activity must be preplanned • Expensive • Limitation to accept change in product • Require more accuracy
APPLICATIONS OF FMS • Surface treatment • Metal forming • Metal cutting machining • Assembly • Testing • Inspection
ROBOTICS It is the branch of engineering, that involves the conception design manufacture, operation and application of robots as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback & information processing is called as robotics.
TYPES OF ROBOTS Depending on the base of robot there are two categories of robots: • Fixed base robot • Mobile base robot
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF ROBOTICS ADVANTAGES: • Productivity • Safety • Quality • Savings DISADVANTAGES: • Expenses • Expertise
APPLICATIONS OF ROBOTICS • Material processing • Research tool in scientific area • Used to perform dirty & dangerous tasks • Used in space & defence applications • Arc welding • Spray painting • Robots for nuclear reactor
