  1. NHAI Initiates Smart Traffic Monitoring on Roads & Highways The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) launches smart traffic management system on national highways. The initiative is a part of Incident Management System (IMS) project, which falls under Bharatmala Pariyojana. Enabling the IMS in tracking and monitoring the highways will ease traffic flow. The National Highways Authority of India has taken up the charge of installing the surveillance system on ten national highways initially. Later, if it works out, the autonomous agency will install the mechanism across all the other national highways and Toll gates in the country. The beginning phases of the project are projected to be completed in 6 months from the time of initiation. The new surveillance system, which has a built-in low-latency Internet Protocol (IP) camera, will curate data on the traffic at Toll gates. The system communicates directly to the command centre in a Regional Office (RO) in the corresponding highway area. Each 30 minutes, the IP cameras will transmit time- stamped photographs to command centres (RO and NHAI). I the congestion is beyond the mandated length, it will automatically switch from camera mode to video mode and live stream the footage. Further, it will send alerts to the command centre to mitigate the situation. With the new surveillance system, the NHAI can get full-fledged control over the traffic, road operations. It will send distress signals on finding ambiguity in the traffic flow. Also, the system will work round the clock and is integrated with high-end technologies to function without interruptions. This initiative will fuel the NHAI’s drive to modernise the highway sector. It gives real-time data on traffic monitoring, traffic signal monitoring and control, traffic camera monitoring and control, active traffic management and more. It also collects data on highways from software embedded in the system, uses that information for 3D mapping and sends it for integration and processing. The Ministry of Road Transport& Highways (MoRTH) proposed this project and handed it to the NHAI. The CGM of NHAI Akhilesh Srivastava is heading this project. The NHAI will install the system as part of its Incident Management System (IMS). IMS reports data on traffic congestion, disasters, and accidents to the command centre and requests it to deploy the relevant facilities such as ambulance, cranes, tow- away vehicles, GPS-monitored patrol vehicles and other. The new surveillance system integrates high-definition cameras, high-quality sensors, and databases to improve the existing traffic management system. It sends the data gathered to the command centres for further integration and processing. The MoRTH sees this initiative solving major setbacks in the Indian traffic and transportation. From enhancing the traffic management system to integrating technology, eliminating highway-risks, the NHAI’s surveillance system embodies the development in many ways. The autonomous wing is testing and implementing the surveillance system at select national highways, if the system works it will replicate the model at all the major highways and Toll gates. The initial phase of the project is set to be completed by 2018.
