Academic • 13 studies primarily measuring outcomes in GPA and retention, primarily in the US. 10 studies administered across the general student population, the remainder (n=3) targeting academically ‘at risk’ students (low engagement, low entry level outcomes. • 6 studies, primarily non-randomised controlled trials. 4 of which were mentoring studies. 1 of the remainder was a counseling study, and the other examined a skills course. Social Practical • 5 studies in this category, designed to tackle alcohol consumption or nutrition. 2 of the studies around alcohol showed an decrease in consumption, while the other did not show any change. The remaining 2 studies were around weight gain (‘The Freshman Fifteen’), and showed limited success.

  7. Intersectional • Defined as having more than one stated aim of enhancing, two or more domains: academic, practical or social. 21 studies in total. • Majority of studies in this category (n=17) focussed on interventions offer to all first year students. • Remained (n=4) targeted ‘at risk’ students, for example, students with low GPA’s or classified as students from minority populations. • Measures of successful outcomes within this group: GPA, Retention in the main, and survey instruments measuring self-esteem, multi-cultural awareness, critical thinking, and social engagement. • Programmes included peer mentoring, learning communities, first year seminars or first year courses, extending themes of orientation and induction.
