Prophets of the DK • The prophets during the Divided Kingdom • Obadiah – Judah in the days of Jehoram • Joel – Judah in the days of Joash • Jonah – Israel in the early days of Jeroboam II • Amos – Israel in the days of Jeroboam II & Uzziah • Hosea – Israel in the days of Jeroboam II & Uzziah • Isaiah – Judah in the days of Uzziah – Hezekiah • Micah – Judah in the days of Jotham – Hezekiah
Intro to Isaiah • Isaiah prophesied from the end of the reign of Uzziah through Hezekiah’s reign in Judah • Isaiah lived and worked in Judah • He worked beyond the fall of Samaria • Isaiah outlived Hezekiah (Is. 37:38)
Overview of Isaiah • Isaiah neatly divides into two sections • Chapters 1-39 • Chapters 40-66 • Some have said that Isaiah is like a “miniature Bible” • They point out that there are 66 books, 39 in the OT and 27 in the NT matching Isaiah’s division • They point out that the message of the first 39 chapters is judgment and the message of the last 27 chapters is hope • While there is some validity to it, I would use caution with such a comparison • Specifically, we don’t want to send the message that the OT is only about judgment or give credence to the idea that God is more harsh in the OT
Overview of Isaiah • Chapters 1-39 • Several proclamations of judgment mixed with calls to repentance • Several Messianic images • Prophecies against Judah (1-12) • Prophecies against the nations (13-23) • Judgment – The Day of the Lord (24-27) • Rebukes and Promises for Israel (28-35) • Historical Parenthesis (36-39)
Overview of Isaiah • Chapters 40-66 • Prophecies of Israel’s deliverance • Prophecies of the suffering Servant • Prophecies of the glorious coming kingdom
