AMoN Status Update NADP Spring 2013 Madison, WI
Current AMoN Site Locations • 61 AMoN sites • New sites sponsored by NY DEC/NYSERDA: • Nick’s Lake, NY (Nov. 2012) • Whiteface Mountain, NY (Nov. 2012) • New sites sponsored by EPA: • Underhill, VT (Nov. 2012) • No sites were discontinued in 2012 • Three additional sites in Canada?
Radiello Deployment • New design for hanging samplers within the rain shelters • New Teflon covered clip • Samplers less likely to fall from shelter • Test from April – July 2013
Travel Blanks *does not include May –August 0.2 Blanks are flagged if NH4+ ion concentration > 0.2 mg/L Fall 2012 meeting: motion passed to ship 1 travel blank every fourth sampling period beginning 1/1/13
Quality Rating Codes for Samples Shipped in Plastic ContainersExample: SC05 • Should samples be invalidated due to the elevated travel blanks? • SAS ARIMA: determine if there is a significant shift in model during May – August 2008 time period for each of the long-term sites. Concentration (µg/m3) Average Model used to fit the data Forced step function
Quality Rating Codes for Samples Shipped in Plastic ContainersExample: WI07 Concentration (µg/m3) No significant shift
ARIMA results Significant shift at 95% confidence limit Based on results of the ARIMA analysis, AMoN samples affected by the plastic shipping bottles will receive a quality rating code = ‘C’. Discussion with QAAG about results and decision to invalidate
Passive Sampler AccuracyRadielloversus Denuder comparison at IL11 • Triplicate denuders deployed at IL11 *January - August 2012 Precision calculated as RPD (%)
IL11 Reduced Major Axis Regression Proposed DQI for AMoN Accuracy: Slope ±20% 2009 - 2012 Radiello= 1.19 x denuder + 0.011 R2 = 0.85 2012* Radiello = 1.35 x denuder – 0.12 R2 = 0.91 *January - August 2012 (QA’ed denuder data not available after August)
Passive Sampler Precision • January 1, 2011 – triplicates shipped to 5% of the network • Proposed precision DQI = 20%
Independent Audit Program • 8 sites participated in independent audit program • 2 additional sites scheduled between April - June
Current AMoN Research Areas • ACCS journal article • ORD bi-di study at Duke Forest • CMAQ versus measured bi-directional flux of NH3 using modified MARGA 2-S system • Triplicate AMoN samplers deployed – comparing hourly concentrations to bi-weekly concentrations • Bi-weekly measurements (and CMAQ) show some errors due to diurnal bi-directional flux • MARGA 1-S system collocated at BEL116/MD99 • Bi-weekly AMoN measurements compared to hourly NH3 measurements from MARGA • Input into total deposition map products • Carnegie Mellon using CASTNET and AMoN data to update agricultural emissions model (EPA STAR funding) • Inter-comparison at IL11 • Triplicate ALPHA and Ogawa samplers • Deployed April 2013 • Move all inter-comparison results into AMoN database and post to website
Planned Activities • Collocation study with Pranalytica NH3 analyzer at IL11 (May 2013) • Analyzer is being repaired/calibrated by the manufacturer • NH3 chamber exposure study to verify the manufacturer’s recommended sampling rate • Samples were shipped to ORD laboratory the first week of April • Radiello, ALPHA and Ogawa samplers • AWMA: NADP AMoN: Five Years of Trends (Lehmann)
