Phase One • Original PCs – Wireless Networked For more details of the company used to convert the PCs to wireless, please click here.
Phase Two • Hard wired original PCs • Laptops – Wireless Networked • Laptop trolley setup For more details about the trolley please click here
Laptop Trolley requirements • Small, safe, easy to use, store and push For more details about the trolley please click here
Laptop Trolley requirements • Cables safely hidden away
Laptop Trolley requirements • Easy for pupils to load and unload
Using the Laptop Trolley • Establishing “rules” for using the trolley and laptops – discussion with pupils • One pupil at a time visits the trolley to load • Laptops carried horizontally • Disk drives checked for floppy disks • Laptops plugged in for re-charge • The trolley is moved around by 2 children at all times
Laptops – the mousepad • Learning new skills
Introducing the Laptops • Staff training on the basics of using the laptops and trolley. • Introducing to pupils • KS2 – whole class, 2 pupils per laptop • KS1 – groups of 6 pupils who each have a laptop, and work with a Classroom Assistant
Further Considerations • Charging • Identification of each laptop • Staff usage • Saving work • Printing work
Further Considerations • Charging the batteries • A system for recharging at any point (The trolley needs 3 sockets plus storage space) • Checking the battery type – whether the battery needs draining or not before charging. • Ensuring laptops are only switched on when they are about to be used.
Further Considerations • Identification of each laptop • Identification and serial number noted. • Each laptop numbered on the top of the laptop so that pupils can easily find the laptop they were working on previously if work has been saved on the hard drive of that computer (i.e. when still in the drafting stage of work). pupils save the laptops hard drive if they are at the drafting stage of a large piece of work i.e. Multimedia. Completed work is saved to the central saved work area.
Further Considerations • Staff Usage • Each teacher uses their class computer e.g. Number 2 for year 2 • The Wireless cards are left in the school office. • Laptops are taken home in bags which have power leads (bought additionally). • Laptops returned to school fully charged. Staff use laptops for • Preparing resources • Familiarising themselves with software • Completing reports and planning
Saving Work • Pupils initially save to floppy disk – this provides a concrete example of computer storage • Pupils move on to either saving work to the laptop they are using if they are at the drafting stage of a large piece of work ie. Multimedia. Completed work is saved to the central saved work area. • There is a shared work area on an old office computer, to which pupils can save and retrieve their work from their own folders. This provides a portfolio of the work the children do over a year. • Staff also have their own folders for storing work and records of achievement. • Staff received training on setting up pupil folders in the shared work area, and saving and loading work from this.
Timetabling • Initially teachers decided on how they would use the laptops with the children. All staff chose to run whole class lessons. • Whole class for all classes – timetabled for developing ICT skills in context • Groups – used for Literacy or history and Geography research
Examples of Class Laptop Use • History Topic • Spreadsheets • Literacy • Powerpoint
Examples of Group Laptop Use • Within carousel of activities • Within literacy hour • For research
Our Next Moves • More laptops • Mobile Interactive Whiteboard and LCD Projector • Developing teaching Resources
The Future for Wireless ? • Whole class teaching – anywhere, anytime • Group and individual work • Maximises resources • Staff training and loans of laptops • When will the pupils have one laptop each ?
