3rd Grade GiftedCurriculum Night Wednesday, August 13, 2014
Where did the desks go? • We do a great deal of group work that takes advantage of the student’s divergent thinking. The desks had to go! This is why…. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzBa-frc2JA -Sir Ken Robinson
Project-based Learning Focuses on student choice, teacher responsibility, and opportunities for differentiation. • students participate in projects and practice an interdisciplinary array of skills from math, language arts, fine arts, social studies, science, and technology.
How we make Project-based Learning work in our gifted classroom: • Follow the district’s curriculum calendar • Adhere to AZ Career and College Ready Standards • Employ both Acceleration and Enrichment • Cross Curricular Projects • Planning a vacation • Fencing a yard • Decorating a Room • Planning a Party • Research Papers • Etc…????
Social-Emotional Activities That Build: • Self-esteem • Teamwork • Communication • Anger Management • Self-Discovery • And Coping Skills
Take a look at a couple of things we have already done! S.T.E.A.M • Marshmallow Challenge • http://www.ted.com/talks/view/lang/en//id/837 • The task is simple: in eighteen minutes, teams must build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, one yard of tape, one yard of string, and one marshmallow. The marshmallow needs to be on top.
A Math lesson on Data, Tables, and Graphs We were able to use our Scholastic book order forms Collect Data We used technology to create a table And then create a bar graph
Using Circle Thinking Maps to compare how the main character (Mary Lennox) differed in chapter one and chapter five.
