  1. A. Reading Turning Garbage into Gold, and Gold into Love Tzu Chi Foundation(慈濟基金會), which has offices in over twenty countries, is one of the biggest foundations(基金會)in the world. The foundation has thousands of volunteers(義工)who not only help poor people, but also try to save our earth from being polluted. Master Cheng Yen(證嚴法師), the leader(領導者)of Tzu Chi Foundation, once said that people can “turn garbage into gold, and gold into love.” In 1990, she came up with the idea of recycling things and started to recycle used paper herself. Then she sold the used paper and gave the money to Tzu Chi Foundation. Later, the foundation started building many recycling stations which collect used things around the island. The money Tzu Chi Foundation collects by selling recycled things helps a lot of people. This makes many Tzu Chi volunteers believe that they can do simple things to save the world and bring love to others. Because of this, more and more volunteers join Tzu Chi Foundation every year. In 2003, more than 40,000 volunteers joined Tzu Chi Foundation to try to “turn garbage into gold, and turn gold into love”!
