  1. Integers and Absolute Value By: Jeffrey McAven

  2. What is a Integer? • A Integer is all positive and negative whole numbers. (Lets look at a summary of all real numbers)

  3. What is Absolute Value? • Absolute Value is the distance a number is from zero on a number line. ALWAYS a positive number • Example: • I -3 I = 3 • I 6 I = 6 • I -6 I = 6 Notice all the answers are positive

  4. Your Turn =) • I -15 I = • I 2000I = • I -10 I = • I 5I + -4 = • I -4I + -9 =

  5. Answers • I -15 I = 15 • I 2000I = 2000 • I -10 I = 10 • I 5I + -4 = 1 • I -4I + -9 = -5

  6. Adding and Subtracting Integers Addition Operation Subtraction Operation Same Sign = Add and Keep the Same Sign Keep – Change - Opposite Different Sign = Subtract and Keep the Sign of the Larger Number

  7. Who wants to write all of that? + - SS = AddKSSKCO DS = Sub KSLN

  8. Lets Practice together • 2 + 8 = • –2 + (-8) = • 2 + (-8) = • –3 + 2 = • –4 + (-7) = • 6 - 9 = • -4 – (-12) =

  9. Answers • 2 + 8 = 10 • –2 + (-8) = -10 • 2 + (-8) = -6 • –3 + 2 = -1 • –4 + (-7) = -11 • 6 - 9 = -3 • -4 – (-12) = 8

  10. Multiplying and Dividing Integers Addition Operation Subtraction Operation Same Sign = Add and Keep the Same Sign Keep – Change - Opposite Different Sign = Subtract and Keep the Sign of the Larger Number Multiplication Operation Division Operation Same Sign Positive Different Sign Negative

  11. Who wants to write all of that? + - SS = AddKSSKCO DS = Sub KSLN X ÷ SS P DS N

  12. Lets Practice • 14(-4) = • (-4)(-14) = • 28 ÷ (-7) = • –28 ÷ -4 =

  13. Lets Practice • 14(-4) = -56 • (-4)(-14) = 56 • 28 ÷ (-7) = -4 • –28 ÷ -4 = 7
