  5. Definition What is Absolute Value? Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero.

  6. The absolute value of 3 is 3 because it is 3 units from zero.

  7. The absolute value of -5 is 5 because it is 5 units from zero.

  8. The graph shows the position of a diver relative to sea level. How far is the diver from sea level?

  9. The symbol |x| is used to denote absolute value. To evaluate the absolute value, ask yourself how far is the number from zero? What general statements can you make about absolute value?
