Reflective Portrait and the Approaches Objective: You will brainstorm ideas in order to create alternate solutions and approaches to how you make art. DRILL: Hang your Reflective Self Portrait on the board with a magnet. What is the most common approach to the assignment? What are some more authentic, creative solutions to the problem? Which ones are different than the norm? ARTISTS MAKE INDIVIDUALIZED ART. What other approach could you use to make these portraits?
Take 12- A miniature concentration *One object in 12 different ways. *Pick an object. Bring it in. *You will be making 12 artworks with it, so you choose something you’ll like. *you will make quick one day pieces that are complete.
What is your approach to art making? List the answers to these questions in your sketchbook. How do you approach art? What is your style? What object(s) are you going to use? A shoe. Something you will have here every day for 12 classes. What are variations to make art with an object as a reference? Take out your yellow sheet. Some columns will be filled in today.
First approach: 1. Get an object. Anything for today. Draw it from observation on a piece of paper. 2. Include the surroundings as you draw. 3. Use any drawing material. 4. Shade it. 5. Use an asymmetrical composition. How can you meet the criteria and use a different approach? Be different! Now is your chance. Think about any ways you could be unique/ creative. Hang them up in 20 minutes.
How can you approach art making? What is another way to approach drawing a lamp? What is another approach to make an artwork with a lamp as an observational reference? What other approaches are there to make art?
First 5 Approaches by Gauger: Draw the object with its surroundings with material of your choice and shade. Use asymmetrical composition for placement. Zoom in. Gestural oil pastel drawing of object Print with styrofoam/ monoprint/ collagraph/ stencil. Oil Paint on canvas over homosoap board Pen & Ink with mark-making over abstract watercolor (small) or gestural ink lines with patchy watery blocky watercolor. Loose lines. Cut out holes in spaces between lines. Glue patterns or designs underneath.
Ways to change it~ Include art elements. Change the composition. Use techniques with materials. Change the style. Change the medium. Use more than one medium. Change the colors. (art elements) Have fun and be creative with it. Experiment/ play. Do more than one of these. Background- scene/ pattern/ design/other? Be adventurous! Make something up!

Composition Add variety. Different variations of same object. Create a focus point. Emphasize an area. Size- Make it larger or smaller- zoom in/ crop it. View- Change the angle that we view the object. Placement- Move the object to a different space in the composition Create repetition- pattern Add more objects or creative background.

Studio Art- Reflective Self Portrait Objective: You will use criteria in order to evaluate what processes you need to do before Thursday/ the end of class today. DRILL: Get out your portrait and supplies. We will look at the grading criteria questions. Today is the last class period to work on this. It is due by 2:00 on Thursday. Finish on your own time. If you are done with the portrait. Do another approach to a portrait using your reflection. Homework due next Monday: Completely fill out the yellow sheet with ideas from each category. Use books and the internet to help youand comment on website.
Fundamentals of Art Critique and Finishing Objective: You will use criteria in order to judge what you need to do to complete your Inspirational Elements artwork. DRILL: Take out your artwork and any supplies you need to finish it. Make sure you mod podge the whole artwork. We will not be doing the critique today. You have the entire period to finish. Once you finish- make art/ Halloween art. Use the questions on the next slide to judge what you need to do today. You must wash a paint tray or bag today.
