Today’s Agenda • Reminder to students who missed the quiz: you must schedule with me to make it up before Wednesday! • Pass back Gnostic article paragraphs • Pass out revised syllabus – reflects a change in Test 1 (it’s been pushed back a day) • Discuss inclusion of participation grade: you will lose points if you are sleeping, distracting others (with behavior or continued talking), or fail to bring class materials

Ecumenical Councils • P. 68 – list of all councils • Oikoumene = the whole inhabited world • What is the purpose of an ecumenical council? • To deliberate and discuss central issues of doctrine and discipline of the Church • Brings together bishops under the leadership of the Pope • What distinguishes an ecumenical council from others? • Bishops are convened from all over the world • Teachings have the highest authority - infallibility • First 7 are recognized by Eastern Orthodox and Protestant churches

Church Fathers • Church Father: traditionally held title, distinguished between East (Greek) and West (Latin), up until about AD 700 • Patristics: study of the teachings and writings of the Church Fathers • Four characteristics: • Orthodox in doctrine • Holy • Notoriety • Lived in the early centuries

The Formation of the Canon • “Canon” means rule or measure • In Ecclesiastical Terminology “Canon” refers to those books approved by the Catholic Church as part of Sacred Scripture • Local Church Councils in the 4th Century are clear witnesses to the Canon being complete • The Catholic Church makes an official declaration at the Ecumenical Council of Trent

How do you know if the English Translation of scripture you’re reading is approved? • Is it one of the approved versions listed? • Douay-Rheims • Jerusalem Bible • New American Bible • Revised Standard Version • Does it have an Imprimatur or ecclesiastical approval? • Does it have 46 OT and 27 NT books?
