  2. increasinguse ofmodernadvanceddriverassistancesystemsismaking driversfeelsaferbehindthewheel.“Theresultsshowthatadvanced driverassistancesystemssupportdriversontheroad,thuslivingupto theirname.Asadvanceddriverassistancesystemsbecomemore readily availableinvehicles,theiracceptanceisalsogrowingandwillonly continuetodoso,”saysGillesMabire,chieftechnologyofficer(CTO) forAutomotiveatContinental. Safetyandindependencewhiledrivingaprimaryfocusformostpeople Accordingtothesurveyresults,safetyandindependencewhiledriving areparticularlyimportantfactorsforalargemajorityof people– particularlythoseaged70andover.Withthisdemographicgroupsetto increaseasashareofGermany’stotalpopulationoverthecomingyears, theriskstowhichseniordriversareexposedwillalsorise,aswillthe riskstheyposetootherroadusersasaresultofpotentialage-related impairment.AccordingtotheFederalStatisticalOffice,around37 percentofroadfatalitiesinGermanyin2022wereovertheageof65, despitethisagegroupaccountingforonlyaround22percentofthetotal population.Inaddition,statisticsshowthatseriousaccidentsinparticulararemorelikelytobecausedbyolderdrivers. Demographictrendpromptsdiscussionsatpoliticallevel Inresponsetothisdemographictrend,theEUCommissionseesaneed foraction.In2023,itproposedthateveryfiveyearsdrivinglicense holdersovertheageof70shouldhavetoeithersubmitaself-assessment ontheirfitnesstodriveorundergomedicalcheckstoconfirmtheyare stillfitenoughtodrive.Theproposalinitiallyevenspecifiedthatall driversintheEUshouldhavetoreapplyfortheirdrivinglicenseevery15yearsandundergomedicaltestsorsubmitaself-assessmentform.In- depthdiscussionswereheldonthematter,andtheEUultimatelydecidedagainstintroducingmandatoryEU-widemedicalchecksin February2024.TheEUmemberstatesmaydecideforthemselves, however,whetherandwhichhealthchecksmakesenseintheirown countries.InGermany,thefederalgovernmentdoesnotimpose

  3. mandatorytesting.InotherEuropeancountries,however,healthchecks arearequirement.InSpain,forexample,driversaged65andovermust havetheirdrivinglicenserenewedeveryfiveyearsandprovidemedical evidenceoftheirfitnesstodrive.LegislatorsinDenmarkrequirea medicalcertificateinordertorenewthedrivinglicenseofthoseaged75 andover.Uponreachingtheageof80,anewapplicationmustbe submittedonayearlybasis.DrivinglicensesinItalyaregenerallyonly validforacertainperiodoftime.Fromtheageof50,theymustbe renewedeveryfiveyears,from70 everythreeyearsandfrom80 every twoyears.Holdersmustalsoundergoamedicalexaminationinorderto havetheirlicenseextended. Technologicaladvancementsinnewcarsmakepeoplefeelsafer Advanceddriverassistancesystemsarewidelyrecognizedashelpingto makedrivingsaferandarebecomingincreasinglyimportant.Somewill evenbecomemandatoryfornewcarsintheEUfromJuly2024. Accordingtothemajorityofsurveyrespondents,advanceddriver assistancesystemsmakepeoplefeelsaferwhiledriving.Acrossallage groups,thereversingcameraisvaluedmosthighlyonaverage(at40 percent),followedbyturnassistandemergencybrakeassistsystems (bothat32percent),adaptivecruisecontrol(31percent),parkingassist (29percent),aswellaslanekeepingassistandintelligentheadlamp control(bothat28percent).Whatisstrikinghereisthatdriversof newercars(builtin2021orlater)inGermanyaremorelikelytosee advanceddriverassistancesystemsasahelpfulaidfordrivingsafety thandriversofoldercars(builtin2020orbefore).Approvalratesrange from65to44percentforthereversingcamera,forexample,from46to 33percentfortheturnassistsystemandfrom53to31percentfor the emergencybrakeassistsystem(ineachcaseforcarsbuiltin2021or laterandforcarsbuiltbetween2011and2020,respectively).This suggeststhatuse ofadvanceddriverassistancesystemshasapositive effectonappreciationforthem,sincetheyaremorewidelyavailableand thereforemorelikelytobeusedinnewercarmodels.Inshort:thenewer thevehicle,themorelikelyitsdriveristoagreewithadvanceddriver

  4. assistancesystems’impactonsafety.“Wesee thesefindingsas affirmationofourworkandasamandatetofurtherdevelopand,where necessary,buildtrustinthelatestsafetytechnologies.Continentalis committedtotechnologicaladvancementsinordertodevelopsolutions forincreasinglysafe,smartandsustainablemobility,”emphasizes Mabire. Accidentstatisticsshowthattheadvanceddriverassistancesystems preferredbyolderdriversofferanappropriatemeansofreducingtheriskofaccidentsamongthisgroup,sincetheycounteractcauseswhich, accordingtotheFederalStatisticalOffice,oftenleadtoaccidentsamong seniorsatthewheel–suchasdrivererrorwhenturning,reversing, starting,stoppingormaintainingdistance.Thefeaturesthesesystems shouldhaveinordertoincreasetheiracceptanceandthefeelingofsafetyamongdriversisanimportantquestionfordevelopers.In Continental’ssurvey,aclearmajorityacrossallagegroups–and especiallyrespondentswithnewercarsbuiltin2021orlater–saidthey personallyfeelsaferinmoderncarsthankstoadvanceddriverassistance systems’easeofuseaswellastherangeoffeaturestheyoffer.Both youngeragegroupsandthoseovertheageof70saidthateaseof usewasimportanttothemforadvanceddriverassistancesystems,butalso forairconditioningandinfotainmentsystems. Keyfactorsthatcauseuncertaintyamongdrivers Thesurveyresultsalsorevealthatacrossallagegroups,thefactorsthat causethemostuncertaintyamongdriversarebadweatherconditions(50 percent),otherroadusers(49percent)andpoorvisibility(48percent). The70+agegroupisalsomoreworriedthanaverage(42percent)about drivingatnight–apossibleindicationofseniors’oftendeteriorating vision. ThesafetyofallroadusersisContinental’stoppriorityinthe developmentandindustrializationofnewtechnologies.“Againstthe backdropofdemographicchanges,we recognizeaneedtocombine personalmobilitywithahighstandardofsafetyintooldage,”explains CTOGillesMabire.Advanceddriverassistancesystemsplayan increasinglyimportantrolehere.Continentalhasdecadesofexperience inthisareaandisactivelycontributingitstechnologicalexpertisefor whencertainadvanceddriverassistancesystemsbecomemandatoryfor newcarsintheEUfromJuly7.Sensors,softwareandintelligent connectivityserveasthebasisforadvanceddriverassistancesystems. Continentalbegandevelopingthesesystemsmorethan20yearsagoand hassinceputmillionsofthesetechnologiesontheroad.Today,the companyisoneoftheleadingautomotivesuppliersinthefield.In2023 alone,Continentalproducedmorethan39millioncamerasandradarand lidarsensorsforassistedandautomateddrivingfunctions. Aboutthesurvey MarketresearchanddataanalyticsfirmYouGov conductedthe representativeonlinesurveyonbehalfofContinentalinMarch2024.As partofthis,2,055Germancitizensbetweentheagesof18andover70 wereaskedaboutsafetyontheroad.
