  1. Bell Ringer • Nineteen years ago, almost to the day, we lost three astronauts in a terrible accident on the ground. But we’ve never lost an astronaut in flight. We’ve never had a tragedy like this. And perhaps we’ve forgotten the courage it took for the crew of the shuttle. But they, the Challenger Seven, were aware of the dangers, overcame them, and did their jobs brilliantly. • Star • Space • Ship • Time • I am an autobiographer as opposed to a fiction writer. In my case I have to remember facts and try to use my talent or my art or my creativity to tell the truth about the facts. I submit that there’s a world of difference between truth and fact. But facts can obscure the truth. Because I write about a time when real people were alive—I mean, it’s not as if that is a time which I can create out 10 of the full complement of my imagination—I have to get back to get the facts. But then I have to do something else in order to tell the truth of the matter. • Writer • Self • Person • Book

  2. November 18, 2012 I can evaluate each vignette in order to understand what it says about the theme of identity. I can apply literary devices within my own writing.

  3. Finish unfinished work • Finish drawing/coloring your maps of mango street. You will have 5 minutes. • Remember you should have 5 buildings and a quote for each building. • If you are finished with your map, you can complete a House on Mango Street Word Search.

  4. Pre-reading questions • How is growing into a teenage body (physically, mentally and emotionally) like moving into a new house/apartment? Compare the experiences of moving into a new house/apartment to the experiences of being a teenager.

  5. Read • Read pg. 39-55: The Family of Little Feet; A Rice Sandwich; Chanclas; Hips; The First Job • Answer the question: How does Esperanza change as she enters adolescence? • How do each vignette show something about identity? • How does it connect to you, something you have read, or your world?

  6. Your next vignette • Describe your adolescence. • This time your writing should be at least 2 paragraphs. • Include at least 3 pieces of imagery and 1 other device of your choice.
