Why are there AHECs? The AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) program was developed by Congress in 1971 to recruit, train and retain a health professions workforce committed to underserved populations.

Capital AHEC Student Numbers The Capital AHEC placed approximately 150 students within its region during 2007-2008. We expect to place around 250 students during the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Increase in UTMB student numbers: • Pediatrics: 60 – 120 • Internal Medicine: 36 – 96 • Other (approximate): 50 - 70
