  3. Dynamic in Diversity “Diversity is Yarra’s most outstanding characteristic and greatest strength” in terms of health and wellbeing this means taking account of …

  4. Long term disadvantage • 1 in 5 households = income less than $500 per week; and • around 1 in 3 households = income more than $1,700 per week.

  5. cultural diversity – public housing estates; • Indigenous community; and • the fact that people living in long term disadvantage have poorer health and shorter lives.

  6. Four key health priorities for Yarra • 1. ensuring healthier eating and physically active community; • 2. reducing and minimising the harm from tobacco, alcohol and other drugs; • 3. improving mental health; and • 4. improving Indigenous health.

MPHP YDHF • Priority 2: Reducing the harm from tobacco, alcohol and other drugs • Yarra stats: • Lung cancer 2nd highest cause of avoidable death in Yarra • Yarra second highest level of alcohol related assaults in Vic • Alcohol related conditions account for 4th highest cause of avoidable death. • Roles: • Who is best to address issues on tobacco, alcohol and other drugs? Eg: Drug Action Plan

  8. MPHP YDHF • Features of the MPHP: • Evidence based; • an understanding of what determines poor health; • Targeted approach; • Designed to provide high level strategic direction to Council • Emphasis on Evaluation and best practice

  9. MPHP YDHF • In Summary Yarra’s MPHP is: • consistent with Council Plan e.g. the commitment to social justice; • supported by key partners and had positive feedback from DHS; • informed by external advice; and • informed by community engagement and surveys.

  10. MPHP YDHF • What Now? • Endorsed as a draft at full Council Meeting on Tuesday 18 August • Consultation on the draft 2009 – 2013 MPHP Priorities – 19 August to 21 September • Back to Council in November • Deadline – 27 November to the Health Minister (Daniel Andrews) • s Australians;
