Writing as a Process • Writing can be approached as a thing, a PRODUCT • We can also talk about WRITING as an ACTIVITY or PROCESS • A process is a series of orderly steps for doing something
Following the steps... • The process involves alternating READING and WRITING • EVALUATING and GENERATING • “Writer’s Block” often involves trying to do various steps at the same time or out of order...
STEP ONE: KNOW THE TASK • STEP 1: UNDERSTANDING THE TASK! You must go through the prompt (if one is given) and understand the component PARTS. • USE A PEN! • ANALYSIS! • Create a CHECKLIST for later.
COMPONENTS! • com•po•nent (km pÖ¿nnt) adj. • serving as one of the parts of a whole; constituent n. • 1a) an element or ingredient b) any of the main constituent parts, as of a high-fidelity sound system
STEP 2: Generating Material! • STEP 2: Generating material (without censoring) • Brainstorming • Webbing • Free writing • Know the rules of each!
STEP 3: Figure out an ORDER • STEP 3: ORGANIZING • figure out an order to your ideas , eliminate some (censoring allowed) • outlining • numbering • listing • You Have to have a REASON*
STEP 4: Get a DRAFT down • STEP 4: DRAFTING • casting the material in sentences and paragraphs according to your ORGANIZATION and choice of STYLE
Who’s Got STYLE? • A. STYLE come from the following questions • 1. Ask yourself: “What is my attitude towards this?” • 2. Ask Yourself: “Who is the audience for this?” • 3. What are the Conventions and Expectations to Be observed
Still on STEP 4! • B. Choose PARAGRAPHS • Choose SENTENCES Why is “CHOOSE” an important word here? • WRITE!
NEXT STEP in the PROCESS? • STEP 5: EDITING • reading WITH A PEN(!) for meaning: effective introduction, thesis statement, topic sentences, paragraph coherence, length and organization, and transitions between paragraphs, effective conclusions, and the ORDERING OF PARAGRAPHS • Have you covered the assignment? (see step 1)
And THEN? • STEP 6: REVISING • writing ANOTHER DRAFT incorporating the changes you have made
Have I FINISHED YET? • ONE MORE STEP! • PROOFREADING! • final check on mechanics, spelling, punctuation, mechanics, usage and your typing before turning the draft in (make necessary corrections) • REPEAT AS NECESSARY!
PUBLISH! • Print the thing out with Name, Date Instructor and Title • Share it • Hand it in
