Why we need ‘em • Over 3.8 million youth, ages 18-24, are neither in work nor school • 1 in every 3 youth will not graduate in 4 years. More than 1/2 of youth of color in low-income communities will drop out • ¾ of state prison inmates are high school drop-outs • U.S. is less than 5% of the entire global population yet we are responsible for 1/5 of the total carbon emissions of eight billion tons of carbon.

No seriously..What’s a green collar job?? • Green Building Retrofitting -- Fixing up buildings so that they leak less energy helps homeowners save on energy bills, lowers the use of dirty energy, and creates jobs like: • - Energy auditor- Green carpenter- Insulation installer- Environmental compliance specialist • Mass Transit and Transportation • - Civil engineers- Rail track layers- Bus/train systems operator- Urban planner
And… • Renewable Energy -- Wind and solar energy are clean and safe energy sources, and rapidly expanding fields • - Wind turbine machinist- Solar and PV (photovoltaics) installer- Iron and steel workers- Solar operations engineer • Public Utilities (recycling, water treatment) • - Recycling center operator- Waste water engineer- Water quality consultant • …Not to mention food production, distribution and sale, or all those green products you see.
It’s about servicegreen service not jails • Serving learning as an engagement avenue for youth in K-12 schools, CCs, higher ed, in green service • Existing service models work e.g. Americorps, Senior Corps, Learn and Serve America • Senior Corps, of the half million participant base, 10,000 work with the Environmental Alliance for Senior Involvement

What will it take? • Policy wins to develop green jobs training programs, service corps, and green job creation • Dedicated federal funding for green job training programs • Community engagement to ensure that green jobs are reaching those who need it the most
