Al Qaeda, ISIL, Split Ties Al Qaeda’s central leadership in Pakistan has officially renounced ties with an increasingly independent ISIL. This move, possibly an attempt by Al Qaeda to reassert control, follows a wave of deadly infighting between ISIL and other rebel groups, which has killed 1,800 – 2,300 since mid-January. Relations between Al Qaeda and ISIL began to suffer last year, when ISIL blatantly ignored an order from Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri to withdraw from Syria.
