Spartan boys and Men • When boys were born government officials came to look at them. • If they are not healthy they are set out side of the city to die. • Healthy boys were trained to be soldiers. • For part of their training they had to run, jump, swim, and throw javelins. • Boys were not given clothes or food even in winter . • They can steal food but if caught they would get whipped.
Spartan Warriors • Warriors stayed in army till age of 60 • Warriors believed the most important qualities of good soldiers were self-discipline and obedience. • Warriors between 20 and 30 lived in Barracks and Occasionally visited by family.
Spartan Girls and Women • Because Spartan men were often away at war, Spartan women had more rights than other Greek women. • Some women owned land and ran households when their husbands were gone. • Unlike other women in other Greek cities Spartan women did not spend time spinning cloth or weaving. • They thought of tasks for slaves. • Spartan women also did the training boys did, they thought this training would help bear healthy children.
Sparta’s New Government • Sparta was officially ruled by two kings who jointly led the army. • Elected officials had more power than kings • Sparta’s government was set up to control the cities, helots, or slaves • The slaves grew crops and did other jobs
Athens • Sparta’s main rival • Had a powerful army • Valued education, clear thinking, and their arts
Boys and Men in Athens • Like Spartan boys, Athenian boys had to learn to run, jump, and write. • Men in Athens served in the army for only 2 years. • Help defend the city between 18 & 20. • Older men only served in the army in times of war. • Athenian students, unlike the Spartans, also learned other skills. • Learned to read, write, and count as well as sing and play musical instruments. • Trained to be good public speakers.
Girls and Women of Athens • Most girls did not have an education because men thought girls shouldn’t be educated. • Women did not have many rights. • [Women could not: • Serve in any part of the cities government • Leave their homes, except on special occasions • Buy anything or own property • Disobey their husband or fathers] • Women in Athens had almost no rights at all.
