  1. Dusk Book 3 Chapter 11 By: Rachel Ragar

  2. Significance of Title • The definition of dusk is “the darker stage of twilight” • one of the darker chapters of the book

  3. Characters • Lucie • Dr. Manette • Darnay • Mr. Lorry • Sydney Carton • Barsad (mentioned) • Little Lucie • Miss Pross (mentioned)

  4. Plot Summary • Lucie faints after hearing the sentence pronounced of Darnay’s trial • Lucie talks about a strong voice inside of her that awoke her from the shock • Lucie reaches out to Darnay and begs to embrace him • Barsad (jailer) overhears this and suggests to the other jailers that they let her embrace him for a moment • Leaning over dock, Darnay embraces Lucie and tells her they will meet again in Heaven • Lucie tells him not to worry about her and that God will support her, but to give a parting blessing for their daughter • Darnay says farewell to their daughter through Lucie

  5. Plot Summary Continued • Lucie tells Darnay that she will take care of their daughter while she can, but she believes this will break her heart and she will possibly die soon • Lucie also says when she dies, God will send friends to take care of their daughter as he (God) did for her. • Dr. Manette follows Lucie and he starts to fall on his knees, but Darnay takes hold of him and asks him why he would do that because they know now how much he has struggled and all he has been through • Darnay thanks him for getting over his hatred for him for Lucie’s sake and Dr. Manette does not respond • Darnay then says “It could not be otherwise” and “Good could never come from such evil. A happier end could never come from such an unhappy ending” and asks Dr. Manette to forgive him.

  6. Plot Summary Continued • As Darnay is taken away, Lucie faints again • Carton picks Lucie up (not all of pity- flush of pride) and she is driven home and placed on a couch where Miss Pross and her child wept over her • Little Lucie begs Carton to help her mom and save her dad • Carton asks little Lucie if he can kiss Lucie before he leaves • When he bent down, he murmured words and little Lucie told them that he said “A life you love.” • Carton and Mr. lorry talk to Dr. Manette about “saving” Darnay • Dr. Manette says he will do what he can, but Mr. Lorry and Carton don’t have much hope at all • Carton concludes that there is no real hope and that Darnay will die and he walks confidently down the stairs

  7. Literary Devices • Repetition- “We know now, what a struggle you made of old. We know now, what you underwent when you suspected my descent, and when you knew it. We know now, the natural antipathy you strove against, and conquered, for her dear sake.” • Apostrophe- “God will raise up friends for her, as He did for me.” (words addressed to God as if he was present and could understand)

  8. Literary Devices • Foreshadowing- “Before I go, he said, and paused. – I may kiss her?” Carton will take advantage of what is happening with Darnay to try to get closer to Lucie

  9. Essential Quote • “Good could never come of such evil, a happier end was not in nature to so unhappy a beginning.” Darnay is basically saying this is what has to happen because he cant change what happened in the past and happiness could not happen in his future after he realizes how much he put Dr. Manette through.
