  5. Mao Zhedong • Led the peoples’ communist revolution • Became leader after the communists suffered major casualties on the Long March • Advocated for the rights of the peasantry • Gave women more rights as well as redistributed land to the peasantry

  7. Guomingdang (GMD) • A Political Party founded by Sun YatSen • Followed the policies of his three principles • This party was usually supported by big businesses, because they were capitalistic • Were overthrown by Mao and the Commies

  9. Long March • Began as an escape plan for the communists to evade the GMD • Ended up lasting over 6,000 miles with many casualties • 80% of the participants died • Was a spiritual and moral victory for them, even though they lost in numbers

  10. Great Leap Forward • Created as a response to extremely large urban populations • Sent city people to villages • Was an attempt at downsizing and lowering population numbers • Was not a great success, one of Mao’s backfires
