OBJECTIVES • To increase awareness of the materials available from the WiPP website – Self Care for People Project • To develop an understanding of how the training manuals can be used • To consider SCSTC as a cost efficient way of managing workloads • To understand the staged process for implementing the SCST courses • To gather ideas on building capacity to run courses within own organisation

Self Care for People Skills Training Course (SCSTC) Self Care Skills Training Course • Flexible training course – 9 hours – peer led • 6 activities (1 hr 30 mins) • Self care self empowerment – health belief model • Motivation and behavioural change • Social aspects of health – self esteem and confidence building • Psychological aspects of health – stress and anxiety management • Physical aspects of health – healthy eating and exercise • Managing conditions and sign-posting • Reviews x 3
Training Package for SCS Trainers • Ideally trainers will have completed the SCST course as a participant • Will undertake 2, 3 or 5 day training, depending on experience and qualifications • Upon successful completion will have a comprehensive training package to cascade SCST course to others Training Manuals
Training The Trainers – 2/3 days training Training the Trainers • Role of trainers • Identification of individual needs • Self development – Johari Window – communication skills (Egan & Rogers) • Review of six activities – management of Power Points • Conducting and analysing assessments (self esteem, self care and anxiety scores) • Risk assessment and confidentiality • Future planning and preparation for teaching
Training The Trainers – +2 days training Training the Trainers • Facilitation and group management skills • Group Development – Tuckman • Group Roles • Leadership Styles • Learning Styles • Conflict Management • Managing Difficult People • Skills Development and assessment of training competence
TRAINING COMPETENCE (pg 71) • To have a clear understanding of the safety and comfort of a group and staff • To be able to create a friendly and safe atmosphere to encourage discussion • To enable participants to understand the content of the course • To enable participants to say what they want to get out of the course • To be able to explain an activity clearly • To be able to manage a group • To be able to sum up the course and find out what people have learnt • To be able to evaluate a group session

COURSE COSTS • SCSTC – run over 6 weeks (20 courses per year) based on 15 people attending each course = £34.38 per course participant • SCSTC – run over 3 weeks (20 courses per year) based on 15 people attending each course = £26 per course participant IN COMPARISON Sick leave costs in the UK are around £1.75 billion – accounting 176 million days off per year averaging 6.8 days per employee
