Birth of Jesus • Probably around 6 CE • Virgin birth by Mary – notified by angel • Emperor Augustus calls a census = taxes • Joseph/Mary to Bethlehem his hometown • Inns full – stay in stable • Jesus raised in Nazareth • Carpentry/Jewish law studies • 30 baptized in Jordan by John the Baptist (cousin)
Jesus’ Teaching • Disciples – 12 followers – ordinary guys • Traditional Jewish beliefs – love, mercy • Kingdom of God for everyone who follows God’s will – not earthly treasures • Parables – stories to explain moral/religious ideas • Feared by some – don’t like ideas/afraid of upsetting Romans
