Barons were very wealthy and powerful men. In return for the land they promised to obey the King and supply soldiers to guard the castles and to fight in times of war. The walls were made of woven sticks (wattle) covered in mud and dung mixed with straw (daub). These houses were taller and wider than the old stick and straw houses.
