Civil Rights. Rosa Parks- Black woman that refused to sit at the back of the bus in Montgomery, AL. Martin Luther King supported her and he led the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Southern Christian Leadership Conference- (SCLC) coordinated civil rights protests across the south.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference- (SCLC) coordinated civil rights protests across the south. Thurgood Marshall- Lawyer who defended Brown vs. Board of Education.
Organizations: Congress of Racial Equality- (CORE) They wanted to see if there was racial discrimination on busses. Led to Freedom Riders (blacks and whites that rode busses from Washington, DC to New Orleans). They were attacked by whites in Alabama James Farmer- leader of CORE, told that the freedom riders needed a “cooling off” period. He said, “We have been cooling off for 350 years. If we cool off anymore, we will be in a deep freeze.”
African American Leaders: Malcolm X- Leader in the Nation of Islam (Black Muslins) criticized integration at first- said blacks need to be separate form whites. By 1964- wanted all to be “brothers”. On February 21, 1965 Malcolm X assassinated.
African American Leaders: Stokely Carmichael- “Black Power” African Americans should create their own culture and political institutions. Rejected by NAACP.
Black Panther Party- (Oakland, CA) Goal was to protect African Americans from police actions that was considered brutality. Which created riots.
