Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • Purpose: • To meet staff and visit two villages where field workers operate • To deliver computer equipment • To hear about latest projects
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • Initially the focus was on supporting people with HIV • Then we realised this is connected to many other issues such as: • Clean water • Funding • Environmental degradation • For example….
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • Cassava is one of the staple crops • People soak the cassava root in water to soften it for few days • This is where they used to do it….
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • Obvious consequences: • Diarrhoea • Malaria • Intestinal parasites Which leads to the conclusion why give people ARV’s if you then expose them to this?
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • So using the principles of basing our work on partnership and grassroots involvement • - Working from the bottom up rather than imposing a top down solution • Our field workers and the villagers came up with this…
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • The Cassava sink • They supply the bricks and labour • We supply One bag of cement, (£16.00!) This builds two sinks • This small scale project delivers something they want quickly and effectively. It gives us more credibility to then talk more about HIV prevention, family planning etc
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • If people stop dying of simple diseases then the population goes up • Then there’s more pressure on resources such as wood for fuel • As there’s more mouths to feed
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • So replanting trees around the village is also key • Local knowledge was vital to choose the best trees for fuel and materials • What grows quickly is also key
Moyo Aids Foundation Visit • The Savings Bank • Villagers contribute 200 MKW per week each = 40 pence • They now have 100,000 MKW =£200 • They sit in a circle once per week to take the money and give out small loans for businesses
