ORNL Participation in ALICE Comments: • ORNL Staff: Awes, Cianciolo, Silvermyr, Stankus (4FTE) plus Postdoc(s) and ORNL-UT associates: Efremenko(50%) and Read (50%) and Sorensen (5-10%). (Young - Physics Division Director, Batsouli - postdoc complete) • Awes and Silvermyr current and projected ALICE “PhD” s (2 M&O) • Hope to commit a future postdoc to ALICE (1 M&O) • Future ALICE participation of Stankus/Young/Cianciolo is open (Values of FTE given above ~= Probability)
ORNL Group (Background) Involved in CERN Heavy-Ion program since its inception in 1985: • WA80 experiment: • Built EM/Had Total Energy sampling calorimeter (MIRAC) in collaboration with LBNL, Lund, and GSI. (Awes, Young). • Built Zero Degree Total Energy Sampling Calorimeter. (Young) • Built custom Transverse Energy trigger for MIRAC used as basis of WA80 MinBias and centrality triggers. (Awes). • Primary responsibility for operation and calibration of MIRAC. (Awes). • MIRAC data analysis. (Sorensen, Awes) • and Direct Photon analysis. (Awes, Stankus) • WA93 experiment: • Same as above for WA80, and in addition… • Built custom electronics for a high resolution BGO photon spectrometer prototype (20-bits effective range) - intended for WA98 but not implemented beyond prototype in WA93. Past ORNL effort on ALICE • ORNL ALICE contributions pre-dating ALICE-USA (as PHOS collaborators raised emphasis on high pT): • Instigated PHOS decision to switch from PhotoDiode to APD readout. • ORNL responsible for PHOS readout conceptual design - large dynamic range (100GeV vs 10 GeV), trigger capability and trigger design,… • ORNL (+ BNL) originators of EMCal proposal - obtained ALICE approval. • Contributed significantly to preparation of various EMCal documents. • A Proposal to Study Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics with the ALICE Experiment at the LHC - March 2002. • ALICE-USA Report to NSAC/DOE - May 2004. • The ALICE Technical Proposal Addendum 3: Electromagnetic Calorimeter - April 2006. • The ALICE Electromagnetic Calorimeter Conceptual Design Report - September 2006.
Recent ORNL effort on ALICE • ORNL Seed Money 125k$ FY2005 for EMCal electronics effort and test beam effort. • Organized first EMCal testbeam measurements at FNAL Fall 2005. • Assemble all components for readout of 64 EMCal towers. • Repair/modify spare PHOS FEE cards for EMCal • Purchase and setup of ALICE DAQ • Define program of measurements, arrange testbeam facilities, testbeam trigger detector readout, organize manpower,… • Oversaw data analysis • Overall responsibility for EMCal readout electronics (Awes) • Adopt PHOS readout to EMCal - FEE shaper modification • Geometrical layout - FEE Crate, Tower to FEE mapping, Trigger inputs • Specification of electrical services - LV, HV, cooling requirements. • Cabling specification - Layout, Connectors, Patch Panels • LV, HV, Ethernet, Trigger In and Output, Fiber clock and readout, Temperature • Service cable purchase and installation - currently being completed
Recent ORNL effort on ALICE • Responsible for APD+Preamplifier purchase, assembly, and test procedures • First APD+CSP test station currently being implemented at Catania • Coordinate with Hans Muller (PHOS/EMCal engineer@CERN) modifications of PHOS FEE for EMCal: • FEE cards - • Currently producing 10 FEE cards of final EMCal design for next test beam • Trigger - • Will use PHOS Trigger Region Units with modified FPGA code • Working with Grenoble engineers on implementation of Jet Trigger module that will use TRU outputs • CSP Transition cards: • Working with Nantes engineers to design EMCal T-cards • FEE crate backplane IPCB and GTL bus • Working with Nantes engineers to design • LED Calibration System - • LED Driver - with Hans Muller
Current ORNL effort on ALICE • Complete design of EMCal readout, I.e. continue all of the above. • Awes planning to go on assignment at CERN in September 2007 • Prepare for test beam in fall 2007 at CERN with pre-production (final versions) of EMCal modules and electronics • Responsible for EMCal Online control, calibrations, and monitoring (Silvermyr) • Silvermyr on assignment at CERN since January 2007 to become familiar with ALICE DAQ/Database “environment” and to assist installation work • Implementation of Database interface for Online controls underway • Common solution for PHOS and EMCal • Working with First PHOS module to assist with (also J.Hamblen of UT) • FEE configuration/control/testing, e.g. zero suppression • Cosmics measurements • Calibrations • Single shower (TRU) performance
ORNL ALICE Activity Summary Technical responsibilities will largely occupy 2 staff (+postdoc) - • Electronics: Complete design, manage purchase, assembly, and testing components of readout of supermodules. (2007-2011) • Detector: Participate in assembly, testing, calibration, installation and commissioning of supermodules. (2007-2011) • L0/L1: Commission single shower trigger; participate in its testing and commissioning. (2008-2011) • Online: Preparation of online control and monitoring software, time-dependent calibrations from LED monitoring data, calibration software. (2007-) • Analysis: Extraction of neutral pion and direct photon spectra. More as manpower permits… (2008-…)
