  7. Past ORNL effort on ALICE • ORNL ALICE contributions pre-dating ALICE-USA (as PHOS collaborators raised emphasis on high pT): • Instigated PHOS decision to switch from PhotoDiode to APD readout. • ORNL responsible for PHOS readout conceptual design - large dynamic range (100GeV vs 10 GeV), trigger capability and trigger design,… • ORNL (+ BNL) originators of EMCal proposal - obtained ALICE approval. • Contributed significantly to preparation of various EMCal documents. • A Proposal to Study Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics with the ALICE Experiment at the LHC - March 2002. • ALICE-USA Report to NSAC/DOE - May 2004. • The ALICE Technical Proposal Addendum 3: Electromagnetic Calorimeter - April 2006. • The ALICE Electromagnetic Calorimeter Conceptual Design Report - September 2006.

  8. Recent ORNL effort on ALICE • ORNL Seed Money 125k$ FY2005 for EMCal electronics effort and test beam effort. • Organized first EMCal testbeam measurements at FNAL Fall 2005. • Assemble all components for readout of 64 EMCal towers. • Repair/modify spare PHOS FEE cards for EMCal • Purchase and setup of ALICE DAQ • Define program of measurements, arrange testbeam facilities, testbeam trigger detector readout, organize manpower,… • Oversaw data analysis • Overall responsibility for EMCal readout electronics (Awes) • Adopt PHOS readout to EMCal - FEE shaper modification • Geometrical layout - FEE Crate, Tower to FEE mapping, Trigger inputs • Specification of electrical services - LV, HV, cooling requirements. • Cabling specification - Layout, Connectors, Patch Panels • LV, HV, Ethernet, Trigger In and Output, Fiber clock and readout, Temperature • Service cable purchase and installation - currently being completed
