  2. ELA March 3, 2014 • ELA Needed Materials: source book, paper, pen, facts and opinions sheet • Agenda Note: Finish reading ch. 2 and record facts and opinions. • Homework: Read independently. Quickwrite: Without referring to your notes, write as many facts and opinions from your reading of chapter 2.

  3. Essential Questions & Standards • What is the difference between fact and opinion? • How does a detective distinguish between fact and opinion? Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.8.1 Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text LA.8.ELACC8W4 - [Performance Standard] - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.

  4. Opening—Remember Fact—a specific detail that is true based on objective proof. Opinion—an interpretation, value judgment, or belief that cannot be proved or disproved. Biased Words—awful, amazing, better, favorite, great, most, unbelievable Qualifying Words—all, always, could, likely, never, possibly, usually

  5. Work Session As you read chapter 2 of Chew On This, record 20 facts and 10 opinions in the appropriate column. Record the page number for each statement. Write in complete sentences.

  6. Closing 3-2-1 Share 3 facts, 2 opinions, and 1 WOW from your reading.

Re-read Toys, Toys, Toys pp. 56-59 and complete Cause & Effect Chart. • Homework: Read independently. Quickwrite: What questions do you have concerning fast food and toys? Why do you think toys play such a big role in the world of fast food?

  10. Opening If you have not finished this assignment…. Finish reading chapter 2 of Chew On This, record 20 facts and 10 opinions in the appropriate column. Record the page number for each statement. Write in complete sentences. Turn in this assignment within 15-20 minutes. 

  11. Opening As we will continue to see, the cooperate world does everything for a reason. Even in everyday life there is a reason or a cause for the things that we do. The reason we eat something is because we are hungry. The reason we may walk to the store instead of drive because we don’t have money for the metro. The reason we don’t eat peanuts maybe because we are allergic. For everything that we do there is a cause. This is called a CAUSE- EFFECT RELATIONSHIP.

  12. Opening continued CAUSE is the reason something happened. EFFECT is what happens as a result

  13. Work Session Use pp.56-59. Class Discussion—There is a reason why fast-food chains give out toys….what is that reason? Do you think it is fair that the fast food industry is using kids (you) to make their money? Read “Wildfires Rage in Arizona” and use the Cause-Effect Chart and note the causes and effects from the article.

  14. Closing Oral Summary What did you learn today? Complete the sentence stem Today, I learned….
