American Symbols – Patriotic Songs By Emily Baldwin
Lesson Description • This lesson is in a unit about symbols and traditions used to honor America. The lesson focuses on patriotic songs and ends in the students learning/singing one as well as being able to name a few. • We will start with a discussion on patriotic songs and name as many as they can think of before watching an introduction video of song mash-ups. Then, using a YouTube video, we will practice singing 'God Bless America', adding kinesthetic movements wherever possible (adding hand/body motions to phrases in the song to help remember) • Standard: History and Social Studies 1.3 Students know and understand the symbols, icons, and traditions of the United States that provide continuity and a sense of community across time. • Lesson Learning Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to name songs that honor this country and sing at least the first stanza of God Bless America.
Technology • Youtube videos, white boards, Prezi, primarygames.com • 2 for teaching [introduction/frontloading, content delivery, closure, etc.]? Closure: http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/games/songs/patriotic/index.htm Each child will pick a patriotic song from the list, print it, and then draw/color a symbol or picture that relates to the song and its lyrics • 1 for student learning [practice, monitoring, creation, assessment, etc.]? Practice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-z5hD38Bs8Y (to 55 seconds) to practice singing (also have printed copy) Assessment: White boards (to write song titles - at least two)
EL and Special Need • The movements are an added adaptation for these students but small groups will also be open to them the next morning. • The small groups will be a mixture of group discussion and a word fill-in of 'God Bless America' on paper as well as time doing the two American symbol related games listed below. • http://www.primarygames.com/holidays/july4/games/match_up/usa_match.htm • http://www.primarygames.com/holidays/july4/games/dragdrop/index_fourth.htm
