Fear and Paranoia Spread • June 1789 - Louis calls troops to Paris in case he needs to maintain order if he moves against the National Assembly • People are not sure about the new government • King is not happy

Rise of the Jacobins • Extreme Left, very liberal • Want a Republic, equality, control of economics (ex. Bread prices) • No king
Execution of the King • Louis is put to trial and convicted of treason against France • Executed in January 1793
Reign of Terror Begins (July 1793 - July 1794) • Formation of the Committee of Public Safety • CPS controls the government, now • CPS is in charge of protecting the republic from “enemies” • Enemy = anyone who disagrees with the CPS
