  1. Thermal Imaging St. 19

  2. What is Infrared Radiation ? • Infrared radiation is a portion of the Electromagnetic Spectrum • It is a form of energy that we perceive as heat

  3. How does a T I work ? • TIC’s read the radiant heat given off by solid objects. • Heat is absorbed by the germanium lens and interpreted into a picture

  4. Limitations • Poor depth perception • Cannot read -Ambient air -Solid water -Shiny or reflective material (mirrors, windows, and stainless steel) • A dirty lens will give a false reading • THESE ARE A TOOL AND CANNOT REPLACE THE BASICS OF SEARCH

  5. Windows • Even though windows give off a reflection to the camera, the radiant heat in contact with the window will show. • Single paned windows will show more heat transfer where double paned windows may show very little

  6. Remember this is a tool to aid you and SHOULD NEVER REPLACE BASIC SEARCH TACTICS. TUNNEL VISION WITH A CAMERA WILL HAVE SEVERE CONSEQUENSES. • FDNY receives a new camera • Camera rep shows off his new camera at a training excercise

  7. Distortion shows higher heat signatures

  8. Other Uses

  9. Water applications • Person in the water • Car in the water

  10. Lost Person • Things to consider • Weather • Time of the year • What else is in the woods with you

  11. Overhaul

  12. Firefighter Safety Remember ! You have to look at it, You have to interpret it The imager can not do it for you!

  13. Firefighter Safety Firefighters in Florence, SC respond to a working strip mall fire An interior attack is initiated with the aid of thermal imagers A scan of the ceiling reveals hidden fire that is rapidly developing, threatening structural integrity and escape routes An evacuation order is given and within a minute of pulling out a collapse occurs

  14. With Law Enforcement

  15. Remember • TICS’s have a back lit screen • If you decide to go with law enforcement to search for a suspect that can harm you…your face will be lit up like a homing beacon • These are not designed for Law Enforcement applications

  16. THE TIC IS NOT AN OPTIONIt always goes with you • Lexington, Ky. 1997 – 2 fireman fall through a floor upon entry. One firefighter perishes after running out of air. The 2nd firefighter is pulled from the basement alive as he runs out of air. • They left the TIC on the truck because they didn’t think the fire looked that bad

  17. April 4th 2008 • 2 firefighters perish in Colerain Twp. After falling through a kitchen floor. • They left the camera on the truck because they didn’t think the fire looked that bad The Camera does you no good on the truck

  18. ANY • Questions? • Concerns? • Comments?
