Essential/Non-essential elements Carbohydrates are composed of: • Oxygen • Hydrogen • Carbon ALL elements are utilised and essential to the body in various ways.
Varieties of the Nutrient • Carbs can occur in three forms • Monosaccharide's • Glucose • Disaccharide’s • Sucrose • Polysaccharide’s • Amylose (starch)
What is the daily recommended intake (RDI)? • Your body needs from 40-50% of calories from carbohydrates, going lower than those numbers is not good for your health. • A balanced diet for an average adult includes 310 grams of carbohydrates a day.
Other useful info: • Low-carb diets can be options for people who want to lose weight, however if this is not balanced then it can be dangerous to one’s health. • Good vs. Bad: • Good: nuts, beans, whole grains. • Bad: cookies, white bread, cake. • If imbalanced, can lead to mood swings and frequent irritations.
